Jim has provided many years of leadership in the not-for-profit sector. He was a founder and incorporator of the Lions' Eye Bank of Saskatchewan - the first of its kind in Canada. As part of that process he lobbied for and helped achieve amendments to The Human Tissue Gift Act and The Coroners Act.  He is a director and past president of Cosmopolitan Industries, a sheltered workshop and activity centre for individuals with intellectual disabilities. He was also a founder and incorporator of Family and Friends of Cosmo & Elmwood Ltd., an organization which advocates for persons with intellectual disabilities and their families.   He served on a committee that advised the provincial government in the drafting of legislation on adult guardianship.  Jim is also a member and past president of the Rotary Club of Saskatoon Nutana.

Jim and his wife, Linda, have lived in Saskatoon since 1980 and have two adult children; one  is a teacher and the other is a journalist. When not focusing on family, profession, or community service, Jim is a musician, playing principal horn in the Saskatoon Concert Band and covering guitar and horn parts for the Saskatoon Klezmer Band.
